Interview with Nicole Abdou
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I come from a small town in northern Lebanon called Kobayath. I grew up there before moving to Montpellier, France, for my studies. In 2023, after completing my Ph.D., I moved to Sweden to begin my first postdoctoral position.I enjoy reading, traveling, and handcrafting. I am known to be a very social person, which is why I love spending time with friends and attending as many conferences as possible to discuss science all over the world.
What about your educational background?
I am a materials scientist, mainly focused on the design and characterization of composites and hybrid materials. I have expertise in advanced material characterization techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance and vibrational spectroscopy. I hold a Ph.D in chemistry and physical chemistry of materials from the university of Montpellier. I particularly enjoy working on projects that require innovative approaches and practical solutions.
What can you tell us about the new associated project you’re a part of?
The project aims to establish a relationship between the radial modification profiles of chemically functionalized fibers and their thermoprocessing behavior and functionality. Using mainly DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR, we will study and quantify how deeply the lignocellulosic fibers are modified. We will then correlate this radial modification with macroscopic properties such as swelling, water uptake, and thermoprocessability. In addition, we will work on adapting the NMR method to enable depth-resolved analysis in heterogeneous fiber systems.
